One of the first campuses designed by VGA, BRCM Vidyagram is located in Bahal, a small town on the Rajasthan-
Haryana border. The 100-acre campus is home to a vibrant community of 1500 students, split across a residential
school and an institute of higher learning.
Initiated at a time when green design features weren't the norm in India, the campus ecosystem was developed to
include multiple concurrent systems of resource management – including solar energy devices, rainwater harvesting
systems, on-site sewage treatment and a bio-gas plant. Over the years, these integrated systems have increased soil
fertility and raised the water table – turning BRCM Vidyagram into an oasis in the arid sub-Aravali landscape.
The design of the project has enabled self-sustenance among its users, with a large chunk of its energy, water and
food needs being met on-site. These facilities have turned the campus into a prominent cultural and educational hub
in the region; by creating strong links with the district population at large, the project has been an important factor
in arresting urban emigration of students from the region, a hallmark of sound social infrastructure.
