Ar. Vijay Gupta is the Founder of Vijay Gupta Architects (VGA), a New Delhi-based architecture and design firm that has flourished for 52 years. The firm possess a rich portfolio of works spanning multiple domains, with a strong foothold in design of institutional spaces. An alumnus of SPA Delhi, Ar. Vijay Gupta chose to pursue architecture at a time when it had little public recognition. Having built his repertoire of practical knowledge over the first few years of his career, he founded his own practice in 1968.
Started in his family home’s garage with the support of his late wife Mrs. Sushma Gupta, VGA was set up with a commitment to delivering projects within the stipulated time and allocated budget. This approach, compounded by Ar. Vijay Gupta’s personal involvement in all aspects of design and construction of each project he took on, helped him distinguish himself in the professional landscape of that time, which majorly consisted of established architecture firms and government bodies.
His dedication to project quality and keen attunement to users’ aspirations quickly garnered him a wide clientele for HNI residences and farmhouses; his practice subsequently grew to cater to the burgeoning entertainment sector of the time, with VGA designing around 30 cinema halls in multiple cities. Ar. Vijay Gupta established his expertise in large-scale design projects with Madhya Bharat Paper Mills in Champa, Madhya Pradesh; his foray in education spaces started shortly after, with the design of DPS Vasant Vihar in New Delhi.
VGA has since won many open as well as invited design competitions for education campuses across the country; notable among these are the Amity School at Saket, which subsequently led to the firm being commissioned to design 15 school campuses and 8 university campuses for Amity Group over a span of three decades. Ar. Vijay Gupta consolidated his standing as an expert in institutional spaces with the competition win for National Agricultural Science Centre in the national capital; this opened doors for VGA to extend their services across the border to Pakistan, where Ar. Vijay Gupta spearheaded the design of schools across every major city in the country, for a leading education chain.
Ar. Vijay Gupta credits his professional success to three A’s – ability, amiability, and availability – which has enabled him to foster lifelong bonds with the people associated with VGA, be it staff, construction teams, or clients. Tempering these qualities with immense perseverance and compassion for everyone he works with, Ar. Vijay Gupta has carved his niche within the education space. A staunch advocate of education for all, his work reflects his values by constantly pushing the envelope on learning methodologies and holistic development for all ages. On a personal front, he has supported the cause by sponsoring the education of several of his staff members’ children. A lifelong learner himself, he continues to stay abreast of developments and innovation in the field of architecture, and uses these insights to inform his design decisions. His commitment to hands-on involvement with every project undertaken by the firm has not waned, setting an example for all at VGA.
Ar. Vijay Gupta, presently aged 82, is an avid art collector; he has also supported many upcoming artists by incorporating their works in VGA’s projects. He enjoys travelling, and nurtures his creative vision by exploring the world. A man of his word, he values punctuality and integrity in everyone – a precedent he has set by his own actions.
